Darren Emerson delivers his recent collaboration with Nick Littlemore of Empire of The Sun this summer on his own Detone imprint.
Entitled ‘Au Go Go’ and featuring remixes from Richard Seeley, Paul Loraine and Darren Emerson himself, the four track release is rousing affair that explores the moody, cinematic side of house.
The original transforms a lazy stepping beat, aggressive synths and introspective piano chords into the perfect setting for Emerson’s emotive and epic vocals. The combined elements make for an immersive and haunting listen that begs for a second run.
Emerson’s own remix takes on a slow burning groove that beefs up the percussion and employs tweaky synths throughout while there’s a rich feel which comes from the producers Adept layering of sounds, in particular the brilliant vocals and twinkling pianos.
Barcelona-based Paul Loraine twists ‘Au Go Go’ into a subtly rhythmic workout. Live drums wrap a fragile yet tight groove around the originals ethereal melodies to create an enthralling and original contemporary house cut.
Richard Seeley, having graced the likes of Rekids and his own Glue Music as well as winning plaudits from critics and djs alike, turns in a deftly executed final interpretation. The approach is a stripped, sparse affair which, when paired with the original’s parts, takes on an trippy groove that references some of Perlon and early-Cadenza’s organic minimalism.
This is a brilliantly varied release which sounds like little else out there. Essential stuff.
